Capsaicin for Arthritis

Arthritis is a joint disorder in which inflammation in one or more joint occurs. There are typically 100+ forms of arthritis but the most common ones are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis etc. As arthritis is considered with joints, the common complaints which people suffering from arthritis have is joint pain. Usually the pain is near the area where the joint has got the disease. The primary cause of the pain is inflammation of the joint, wearing or tearing of the joint, muscle stain or stiffness, damage to the joint which is caused by the disease.

The common symptoms of mainly all types of arthritis involve joint pains, swelling, stiffness etc. People suffering from arthritis suffer from a no. of problems including inability to use the affected part, tiredness, fever, tenderness, weight loss, poor sleep, loss of flexibility, difficulty in moving the joint, muscle pains etc.

There are many types of treatments which are available for arthritis and doctors often give preference to certain physical exercises of the joint which has got affected due to the disease. In most cases, these exercises have helped the patients by providing them relief from pain, improving the movement of the joint and delaying the need for surgical operations for the treatment. There are medicinal treatments also available for arthritis apart from the exercises which are used to treat arthritis to a certain level.

Capsaicin is an active compound which is found in chili and pepper. Capsaicin is hot in nature and has got the qualities to treat and give relief from pain to those patients who suffer from arthritis. There are capsaicin creams which are specially made for arthritis patients.

According to a research, the capsaicin cream was applied by 70 patients and 30 patients applied the placebo. After a month of daily usage, the patients which used the capsaicin cream reported 57% lesser pain than what it was earlier. This amount was higher than the ones who used placebo and hence the conclusion was made that capsaicin creams are the most preferred and the best ones for those people who are suffering from arthritis and want relief from pain.

The patient needs to take some safety precautions while using the capsaicin cream. Here are some precautions one must take.

  1. Wearing gloves while applying the capsaicin cream is a must as to save you from possible allergic reactions.
  2. Do not apply the cream immediately after a hot shower.
  3. Avoid contact of the capsaicin cream with mucus membranes and eyes particularly.
  4. Pregnant women must consult their doctors before using capsaicin creams.

Capsaicin cream can cause certain side effects too and hence one must consult their doctor before commencing the use of the cream. Some commonly reported side effects include

  1. Burning sensation in the area where the cream is applied.
  2. Rashes or redness on skin
  3. High amount of dose can cause inflammation, blisters and severe pain. Therefore, the right amount of dosage must be considered while using the cream. The recommended stating dose is 0.025% capsaicin cream. This can be increased after consulting a doctor in case of no relief.
