Capsaicin in Peppers and Its Versatility

Though it is not easy to pronounce ‘capsaicin’ but it is suitable for someone who relishes the spicy foods as it is the name of the chemical that make peppers hot and is used with a wide range of products to give you surprising tastes.

Capsaicin is an alkaloid, stable and extremely powerful, produced, at the junction of pod walls and placenta of pepper, by the glands as a crystal, according to the scientists, and is usually found in pepper chili only. Chili pepper is the best thing to make your dish hot and spicy and produce different flavors from it.

Capsaicin is the natural substance in the chili pepper that reacts with the heat sensors of your tongue to give you a thrilling taste and flavor. The intensity of heat varies with the amount of capsaicin in the pepper. The more the quantity of capsaicin the more inflaming will be the effect as pepper spray made from capsaicin gives a sensation of burning on the skin.

Capsaicin in chili is used throughout the world for producing spicy cuisines, mostly in the Indian, South American, Mexican, and many Asian cuisines. It can be used in a variety of forms like fresh, dried, flaked or powdered, during cooking, after cooking or in raw shape. Capsaicin as chili can be used by adding in some food supplements like sauces that are hot and spicy in taste.

The hottest chili is found in the Northeastern region of India and is known as Naga Jolokia, which laterally means King Cobra chili and is also popular with the name of ghost chili. Even a seed of Naga Jolokia can give you the experience of its intensity of heat as it may not relieve you from its heat until half an hour. It should be used with extreme caution as it is many times hot than many other chilies like Jalapeno Chili Pepper.

Though capsaicin is found only in chili and its heating effect makes your food spicy and hot but it has several other uses apart from it.

Other uses of capsaicin 

  • Capsaicin though reacts with your skin giving it a burning effect but even then it used as creams and ointments to apply on your skin. It used mostly in pain relaxant creams which give burning effect in the beginning but the pain gets subsided after repeated applications.
  • Capsaicin stimulates the circulation of pain signals and triggers pain receptor cells to release helpful endorphins and is also used in various drugs to ease the pain of arthritis and other ailments.
  • Capsaicin puts the sting in pepper spray and is used in repellent sprays to protect gardens from animals and pests.
  • Chemists are developing a marine coating, which is environmentally safe, with capsaicin that will stop barnacles to grow.
  • Capsaicin can improve the digestive system: It fights with the infecting bacterias and increases the digestive fluid in the stomach.

Thus, capsaicin in pepper can be found in a wide range and can be used in versatile ways for the benefit of human being.
