The Role of Flavonoids as Antioxidants

Before knowing about antioxidants, first you shall know about oxidation.  It is a chemical reaction in which the transfer of electrons from a substance to oxidizing agent takes place.  Antioxidant means a molecule which is having capability of slowing the oxidation of other molecules. They terminate the chain reactions by removing intermediates.  Flavonoids are phenolic substances separated from the vascular plants over 8000 known compounds.   Plants are scavenger free due to the presence of antioxidants flavonoids.  Most of the ingested flavonoids are degraded to various phenol acids to possess an ability of radical scavenging.

These flavonoids not only act as antioxidants but also as antimicrobials, photoreceptors, visual attractors, feeding repellants etc., They show their antiallergenic, anti viral and anti inflammatory characteristic features controlling free radical formation .  The anti radical property of flavonoids is directed towards HO and oxygen as well as peroxyl and alkoxyl.  As these represent strong affinity towards iron ions their antiperoxidative feature enables chelating iron.  These act as antioxidants and prevent its access to the lipid membranes.   These property of flavonoids is helpful for to treat the diseases associated by free radical injury.  Though the name is not heart often, but flavonoids play a major role to procure you more health benefits.

Flavonoids acts as antioxidants and work in the body to destroy cell damaging free radicals and metallic ions.  Scientists found that some flavonoids even influence as antihistamine, antimicrobial, mood enhancement, and on memory also. Flavonoid intake is inversely related to mortality rate as it decreases the coronary heart diseases and heart attacks to a maximum extent.  In our normal life, recognized antioxidants are vitamin C,E,Selenium and carotenoids etc., Recent studies proved that flavonoids in fruits and vegetables also act as antioxidants.  Flavonoids can even replace Vitamin E as chain breaking anti oxidants.  Every human should intake 50 to 800mg of flavonoids in to the body.  The high consumption of tea and wine increases the flavonoid content in the people.

LDL means low density lipoprotein in which they play an important role in atherosclerosis.  LDL oxidation can be induced by macrophages and can be catalyzed by copper.  Certain flavonoids protect LDL from oxidization by the mechanisms.  Depending upon the molecular structure, flavonoids act as antioxidants.  Quercetin is the most abundant dietary flavonol as it is having the right structural features  for controlling radical scavenging activity. The anti oxidant properties in flavonoids are ofted compared to quercetin, genistein, naringenin  and E vitamin.Prenyl group plays a major role in antioxidant activity.

It is finally concluded that  Flavonoids are very important for health as it fights with virus, allergies, platlet problems, inflammation problems, tumors and many ailments. Drinking Cup of Tea is good to heart which can empower the flavonoid antioxidants. Tea is themost important source of flavonoid antioxidants.  Different types of tea may have different sources of dietary flavonids. Both green and black tea will metabolize in the same way.

People should consume enough quantities of furits, beverages, vegetables, chocolates and tea for escaping flavonoid deficiency.
