The Significance of Flavonoids in Plants

Flavonoids are the natural substances that are found in the plants and act as antioxidants for the betterment of mankind. These are normally known as bio-flavonoids and have the potential to protect human being from the risk of many diseases, even chronic and fatal diseases. Flavonoids in plants do not play much part in the development of the plant but it is there for the development of human being. One can get the advantage of these flavonoids by consuming fruits and vegetables and secure himself from the diseases like cancer, heart diseases, age related macular degenerations etc.

Flavonoids have different categories like flavones, iso-flavonoids, neo-flavonoids, carotenoids, polyphenolic flavonoids etc. Normally, flavonoids have sugar content in them and are extensively available from plants. Flavonoids in plants protect and repair the ruptured blood cells, supply vitamin C, prevent ones body from excessive irritations. Certain symptoms indicate the need of flavonoids in ones body like bleeding from nose, repeated infections for cold, occasional swelling etc. Raspberries, strawberries, apples, apricots, blueberries, pears, black beans, pinto beans, tomatoes, cabbage, onions and parsley are some of the excellent sources of flavonoids.

Flavonoids have more than 6000 species that are available from plants, which are expressed by the plants through their colors like red, yellow, orange etc. that encourage us to consume them. Scientifically or say biologically flavonoids were discovered in 1938 by a Hungarian scientist. In general terms flavonoids in plants can be described as groups of different chemicals present in the plants. Anthocyanins, anthocyanidin, flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, flavonols, dihydroflavonols etc are some of the groups of different chemicals that are called flavonoids. Numerous flavonoids are found in such each group of chemicals.

Flavonoids in plants perform various functions for the wellbeing of mankind as they act as antioxidants and protect human body from the damages caused by the oxidizing free radicals alongwith maintaining the structure of cells in the body. It has been revealed through several experiments that these flavonoids also support the action of vitamin C in ones body for curing the problem of blood vessels. Severally, undesired response or over reactive responses of immune system initiate certain damaging or dangerous inflammations in the human body. These excessive reactions of irritative conditions can be controlled by the chemicals of different flavonoids. Viruses and bacterias are also found to be controlled by the use of several flavonoids, due to their antibiotic properties.

The deficiency of flavonoids can be evident from certain symptoms frequently seen in our daily life. Swelling after injury, bleeding nose, abrupt bruising, frequent cold infections etc are some of the symptoms that are visible in our day-to-day routine. These all situations can be over powered by the use of flavonoids in some form or other. Flavonoids have no side effects even if taken in high quantity. Flavonoids in plants are more effective if consumed raw. The cooked foods are experienced to lose the flavonoid content more than 50%. So, the fruits and vegetables taken for flavonoids should be consumed either raw or slightly steamed than fully or over cooked.
