About Meso Zeaxanthin

Meso Zeaxanthin, an equivalent carotenoid compound to Zeaxanthin, is produced by the lutein in the macula of the eye in the lack of 3R. Meso Zeaxanthin can not be obtained from food items. Its production in the eye decreases with the increase in the age of the human being. Some supplements of Zeaxanthin have Meso Zeaxanthin in them but it is not declared on their labels.

To know what Meso Zeaxanthin is one has to go through the researches done by the ophthalmologists so far. The researches had found nutritional compound of carotenoid more prominently in retina of our eyes than any other part of our body. Certain yellow colored compounds carotenoids like Zeaxanthin and Meso Zeaxanthin are found amassed in the center of retina alongwith macular pigment or lutein to filter the blue rays of light focused on the retina through cornea and lens to calm them before reaching the photoreceptor layer of the retina.

The accumulation of these carotenoids in the central part of retina is ten thousand times more than its presence in our blood. The central part of our retina, macula, is of yellow color because of the existence of two dietary carotenoids Zeaxanthin, lutein and another carotenoid Meso Zeaxanthin, known as macular pigment which calms down the blue light rays before reaching the outer retina of our eye. Meso Zeaxanthin is the product of lutein present in the macula of retina.

Meso Zeaxanthin, the carotenoid, in the macular pigment absorbs the blue light to save the retina’s photoreceptor cells in the macula from getting damaged by the light. All the three compounds, Zeaxanthin, lutein and Meso Zeaxanthin, present in the macula of retina are vital elements for a clear and proper vision. The oxidation effect produced by the light is reduced by these carotenoids which save the retina through their antioxidant feature. But by the increase in age of a person the proportion of the three carotenoids become unbalanced and hence the vision gets affected in older age. The lutein in the macula looses its potentiality to produce Meso Zeaxanthin at older age.

Meso Zeaxanthin can not be obtained through diets and supplements rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein as it is produced within the macula of the retina by lutein itself i.e. it is a semi-synthetic compound in the retina. Foods rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein can only maintain the integrity and structure of the macula in the central portion of retina. A small quantity of Meso Zeaxanthin can be recovered from the supplements rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein but not from diet.

Certain supplements rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein provide proper dose of Zeaxanthin, lutein and Meso Zeaxanthin to save the eyesight of your valuable eyes alongwith fighting for the tiredness of the eyes. These supplements also contain certain flavonoid compounds to motivate the generation of a compound called Rhodopsin. It saves the retina from the damage, caused by light, by absorbing the blue light to calm it down. The lack of Rhodopsin in retina causes night blindness.
