Foods rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein can protect the photocells from being damaged due to the blue light ray from sun by filtering the light rays before reaching the outer retina of the eyes. Zeaxanthin and lutein as antioxidants make a safety layer on the retina to prevent age linked macular degeneration and cataract.
Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid compound found in the central portion of retina called macula alongwith another carotenoid named as lutein to form a preventive layer for the degeneration of photocells of retina due to increasing age. One more carotenoid, Meso Zeaxanthin produced by the lutein, acts in this process as antioxidant. The deficiency of all these carotenoids can be recovered by consuming supplements and foods rich in Zeaxanthin. Lutein and Meso Zeaxanthin. These carotenoids are not produced naturally in human body. These rich diets are also necessary for certain other reasons like regular smoking and alcohol consumption, less intake of vegetables and fruits etc.
The food items rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein are turnip greens, romaine lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, corn, eggs, kale, spinach, garden peas and collard greens. The maximum benefit of Zeaxanthin and lutein can be got from these food items by consuming them either lightly steamed or raw. These nutritious ingredients are found in abundance in green leafy vegetables.
Both the compounds alongwith Meso Zeaxanthin generate a yellow pigment that helps in filtering the blue light rays coming through the cornea and lens to cam them down before striking to the photocells on the outer retina to form a cool picture there. These are found concentrated in the macula, the central portion of the retina.
Zeaxanthin alongwith lutein and its derivatives perform many essential functions for the betterment of our health as they act as antioxidants to prevent several kind of infections and AMD, improves the health of eyes by protecting the retina from blue light rays of sun, several chronic disease can be caused due to the deficiency of these nutrients. Thus, the intake of rich foods in Zeaxanthin and lutein is necessary for our eyes as well as general health.
Foods rich in Zeaxanthin does not have any toxic effect if consumed in abundance. The cooking or over cooking of such foods can destroy these nutritious ingredients and they are very less effective in this regard. Most of the lutein gets reduced after cooking the rich food though the effect of cooking on Zeaxanthin is not very clear till now.
The functioning of carotenoids got from the foods rich in Zeaxanthin and lutein gets affected severally. This carotenoids are fat soluble and gets absorb easily alongwith the dietary fat. The level of these nutrients reduces if the diet having very less fat content is taken because they do not get absorb completely from the food eaten. Less consumption of vegetables and fruits and consumption of alcohol and smoking regularly reduce the level of Zeaxanthin and lutein that cause many chronic diseases alongwith adversely affecting the eye sight.
