Fruits that are High in Antioxidants

It is not difficult to find fruits high in antioxidants today. Berries like cranberries, blueberries blackberries and even the acai berry are extremely rich in them. Even fruits like peaches and lemons are rich in antioxidants. Here is some detailed information on some of these fruits and also a few others.

For starters, fruits are actually the vessels that plants use for protecting the seeds under a fleshy coating made by the ovary!

The acai berry is a South American fruit and it tops the list of fruits high in antioxidants available today. Experts even believe it to be the fruit that is partially responsible for the prolonged life of the native South Americans who survived solely on berries until recent times.

Blueberries apart from being high on antioxidants are also highly nutritious.  It contains many different phenols, minerals and even a list of vitamins. When it comes to antioxidants, blueberries are known to be high in resveratrol.

Next in the line of fruits high in antioxidants are cranberries. They are also high in antioxidants, especially reseveratrol. Although not many people like consuming cranberries by themselves as they are quite tart to taste but they are used in many recipes that are sweetened. Moreover, cranberries are also highly acidic by nature. Many doctors prescribe them for patients that have urinary infections and problems. This is because the acids in the fruit eliminate the bacteria that cause these problems.

Even grapes figure in the list of fruits high in antioxidants. But it is the seeds and skins of this fruit that are known to be highly nutritious. Seedless grapes should be avoided in order to get the true nutritional value of this fruit. If consumed, the skins should not be removed. Also, here is a fact that wine enthusiasts and aficionados will love to hear; red wine made from grapes is also a very healthy antioxidant! But the same does not hold true for white wine as it is made from those grapes whose skins have been removed. This makes red wine more nutritious compared to the white one. Grape skin contains OPC’s and resveratrol; both are vital antioxidants for increasing the lifespan of an individual.

The need for antioxidants in the human body:

Antioxidants are needed by our bodies for multiple reasons. Firstly, the oxidative balance of the body needs to be maintained as over oxidation can lead to ailments and abnormalities. It also prevents damage to the cell membranes and even protects DNA from mutation. Moreover, it also protects the body from radical damage and lengthens the ageing process. Antioxidants are even responsible for protecting the body from muscular degeneration.

How to measure the antioxidant activity level of foods? :

There is a specific scale that is used to measure the antioxidant content and activity of all the foods that contain the same. This scale is called the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity Scale, also abbreviated as the ORAC Scale. According to the United States’ Health Department, eating foods that have a high ORAC Score has the following benefits:

a)     Fruits high in antioxidants raise the blood’s antioxidant powers

b)    Prevent the loss of memory in middle-aged individuals; especially long-term memory.

c)     Maintain the brain’s abilities to respond to the various chemical stimuli

d)    Protect the blood capillaries and the blood vessels from damage caused by oxygen.

In addition to this, there is a lot more research done by experts today that has prompted people to take up the different antioxidant supplements. But the fact remains that there are no substitutes for fruits that naturally contain different antioxidants as they are also rich in other nutrients that the body needs.
