Antioxidants in Algae

To deal with the free radicals and the species of reactive oxygen in our normal cells we need different enzymes and also some non- enzymatic substances. Enzymatic factors include peroxidase and its non-enzymatic counterpart incorporate ascorbic acid. The real problem arises when there is an imbalance between amount of oxidation and the supply of antioxidants to our body cells. Over a period of time this oxidation starts to become harmful for our body and those free radicals start bringing unwanted modifications to our molecules of proteins and other important structures inside our cells. The key to this problem is seen to be provided by antioxidants in algae. It seems to have a huge source of antioxidants inside it, the kind needed by our body cells. This should help maintain the balance of antioxidants and the one responsible for oxidation, the prooxidants. If the level of prooxidants is not in control then it lead to gastric ulcers and other dangerous diseases.

Scientists have given us the option of many synthetic substances to be used as a source of antioxidants. It includes butylated hydroxianisole and the most famous proply gallate. But we have known even as kids, synthetic substances can never be completely good for our body. It has to have some side-effects and yes! You are right, there is. Its excess use will be quite hazardous for our health.

There has been quiet an extensive research going on to find out the vital natural source of antioxidants. The millions spent on it have reaped. They have found antioxidants in algae. Chlorella vulgaris is the names of that god gifted algae. This marine source of antioxidant has become the catch of the century. Although this quality of microalgae is recently known, it has been a part of the Japanese diet since a very long time. So people don’t be afraid of eating it. The best part is, when you taste it you will feel like you are having green tea.  Some people say it doesn’t taste at all when you are having it with some juice or water. Till now this algae was used for producton of natural dyes and other items related to skin care. When the microalgae is undergone a procedure called water extraction it gives out a by-product called protein-waste of algae. These wastes a given to animals to eat because they are cheap and as mentioned clearly, it a waste! But researchers have now found that these wastes proved to be showing antioxidative qualities. The important part of that waste is named pepsin hydrolysate. Scientists also tried experimenting on protective effects which it provided to our cells. They were surprised to see how it worked wonders on the damaged cells caused by oxidation.

Antioxidants in algae have been the most important ingredient of almost every anti-ageing and other skin beauty product. This itself is a proof that how good an antioxidant it is when it is used by some of the major cosmetic companies in the world. Blue- green algae we’ve heard of not just an antioxidant but it also fortifies our immune system and treats different kinds of skin infections. Even natural things in exaggeration are not recommended. This is the same thing but with worse effects when taken in very high dosage. The red algae found in the deep oceans are also rich source of antioxidants but they have a more lucrative advantage of curing iron deficiency diseases like anemia. Out of all the kinds of algae Spirulina seems to be the best source of antioxidants. Antioxidants in algae along with other advantages are foreseen to be best source of antioxidant available to mankind.
